In the Event of a Serious Medical Emergency

If a person loses consciousness, or has severe chest pains or difficulty breathing,or other serious problems, call 119 and request an ambulance.

How to call an ambulance:

  • 119 is the number for the ambulance, fire and rescue services. As soon as you get connected, say whether the person has been taken ill (byo-nin desu) or has been injured (kega-nin desu).
  • Describe the person's condition and give the address. If you don't know the exact address, try to give the name of a nearby building or street crossing.
  • Ask the emergency phone operator what you should do until the ambulance arrives.
  • Give your name and the phone number from which you are calling.

When calling from a public telephone:

First press the Emergency Call button on the telephone, and then dial 119.

You don't need to use a telephone card or coin: the call is free.

When calling from a mobile phone:

If you are driving, stop your vehicle in a safe place, and then phone.

Describe the accident or situation, and report that you are calling from a mobile phone.

The ambulance/fire department may need to contact you again for more information, so be sure to keep your mobile phone switched on for at least 10 minutes after your initial report.
