Wakaenoshima

Historical sites

Wakaenoshima is the oldest site of harbour work still existing in Japan. During the Kamakura period, the Zaimokuza beach flourished with merchant boats from all over Japan. However, due to the wide shallow beach it was difficult to unload cargo and there were many shipwrecks. Therefore, a Buddhist priest (Kanjin-shonin Ouamidabutsu) created an artificial island under sponsorship from Hojo Yasutoki. During low-tide, visitors can access the rock platform.
