Beautiful nature in each season, many different ways to enjoy Kamakura

Enjoy Kamakura which has a different appearance in each season. Influenced by the sea on the south side, Kamakura is blessed with a cooler summer and a warmer winter compared to inland areas.
The comfortable climate lasts throughout the year, with an annual average temperature of around 16°C(61°F).

SPRING

In March, Kamakura is still chilly with an average temperature of around 10°C(50°F) and you will need a coat or jacket. The temperature rises and cherry blossoms start to bloom in April. Yabusame (horseback archery) takes place at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu on the third Sunday of April. The average temperature is around 14°C(57°F) in April and 19°C(66°F) in May. You will need a light jacket or coat in April and a cardigan or long-sleeved shirt in May. This is a fresh season with new green leaves.

SUMMER

The average temperature is around 22°C(72°F) in June, 25°C(77°F) in July and 27°C(81°F) in August. The period from June to mid-July is the annual rainy season and you will need an umbrella. Japanese hydrangeas also blossom in June. Some days in July and August can be extremely hot and humid, with temperatures of 35°C(95°F) and above, so be careful of heatstroke. Beaches and beach houses in Kamakura are open from July 1 to August 31. The Kamakura Fireworks Festival takes place at the end of July.

AUTUMN

The period from late August to October is quite rainy and is often affected by typhoons.
The average temperature in September is around 23°C(73°F), but some days still see temperatures above 30°C(86°F). Yabusame (horseback archery) takes place at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu on September 16. The weather gets chilly near the end of the month. October brings the fall air, with an average temperature of around 19°C(66°F), and you will need a jacket or light coat. The average temperature goes down to 14°C(57°F) in November, often with minimum temperatures below 10°C(50°F). You will need warm clothes if you don't like the cold. This is a good season for hiking, and you can see the fall leaves from late November to early December.

WINTER

The cold gets severer in December. The average temperature is around 10°C(50°F) in December and 7°C(45°F) in January and February. Although the temperature rarely goes down below zero during the day, you will have to prepare for the cold with a warm coat, gloves or hat. Many tourists visit the city in January for Hatsumode (the first visit to the shrine in the New Year).
